never before or since has grant experienced anything quite like the grant chapter of the national latin honor society.
Under the aegis of a group of Latin-loving seniors and juniors from the classes of MCMLXIII and MCMLXIV, the school received its charter from NLHS national headquarters in the fall of MCMLXII. (The NLHS still exists today at the national level as the National Senior and National Junior Classical Leagues.)
When not amusing President Kennedy (a known Latin aficionado) by sending telegrams informing him that April 15th was the 2,716th anniversary of the founding of Rome, Grant NLHS members teamed with their counterparts at high schools throughout Oregon—especially North Salem High—in a shared and thoroughly grandiose vision of creating a regional Latin studies network stretching from Alaska and Alberta, Canada through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, and Arizona.
The Grant chapter's handmade mimeographed newspaper, Heus, Amici! (Hello Friends!), was ultimately adopted as the official newspaper of the Oregon Junior Classical League and, as graduation neared for the Grant Class of MCMLXIII, the NLHS fasces were handed over to the Class of MCMLXIV who carried on the following year as the Junior Classical League.
Fueled by bimonthly sales of those traditional Roman treats: glazed doughnuts and maple bars, the chapter's treasury ballooned to a whopping $52.78, enabling members to conclude the organization's first year with a blowout ice cream party at Mr. C's Hippopotamus in Lloyd Center that included Latin teacher Doris Hanlon and NLHS advisor Alice Armstrong.
